Top 5 Things to do in Venice

Wandering through the streets of Venice there is no question that it is somewhere special. The narrow walkways winding through the buildings following the canals are always bustling with people. This is a city made for getting lost (in a good way). The best things about Venice are the little places you stumble upon when you let yourself wander.

These are the top 5 things you MUST make time for in Venice:

  1. Visit Burano. I know it seems silly to leave the Venice if you are only there for a short time, but Burano is worth it. Burano is a tiny colorful village where the locals are known for making beautiful handmade lace. There aren’t many things to do on this island other than wander or try a local restaurant, but if you want a slow paced day this place is perfect.
  2. Drink an Aperol Spritz with the locals. Before dinner take time to wander the streets looking for small local hangouts. There’s so much more to learn about the culture of a city by getting to know the locals and venturing away from the typical tourist spots. What’s even better is finding a place with an aperativo. These little bites are a great way to try some local food without committing to purchasing a whole plate full at dinner.
  3. Take the Secret Passages Tour at Doge’s Palace.
  4. Wake up early to see St. Mark’s Square without a sea of people. St. Mark’s Basilica is unbelievable. We woke up at 6 to make sure to catch a glimpse before a line started to form in front of the door. The only other people in the square were a few people feeding the pigeons and shop owners setting up their booths. We wandered to a nearby spot for croissants and espresso and returned to get in line for the basilica by 9. Once the Basilica opened we were some of the first people inside, again a wonderful way to see the beautiful architecture before it was crazy crowded.
  5. Don’t be afraid of wandering a little outside of the crazy tourist areas in Venice. The best views of the canals are where there are the least people. Some of the best restaurants we found were off the beaten path. You’re much more likely to find something that isn’t as overpriced. We found a small hole in the wall restaurant that only had two seatings a night. It ended up being the best dining experience we had on our trip.
